BESIDE THE SEA
1987 (19.5" x 15.5")
ACRLYIC ON PAPER
Pivate Collection
In the foreground a dark figure is
seated on a bench : the head, with it's solid planes of light
has the fixed expression of a gothic wood carving. One hand has
a tight grip of a glass, the other grasps the knee. In the middle
ground left, there is part of a ruined building and next to it
the near end of a roll top caravan. There are four windows though
which can be seen the moonlit sea: they seem like two pairs of
eyes staring emptily at the seated figure. The insubstantial line
of a broken down wire fence separates the solid bottom third of
the painting from the fluidity of the rest. In the distance there
is a scarcely discernible lighthouse, the beacon shows no light.
The moon, though partially obscured by rain clouds nonetheless
sheds a light that is almost as bright as day.
