The Barras', Glasgows most famous market is open at the weekends. On Saturday and Sunday it is packed with milling crowds of cheerful people intent on having a good time. Antiques, junk, tools, clothes and household goods new and second hand. Almost anything you can think of can be found here cheaper than anywhere else.

Painted in 1984 it marked a turning point in the artists career. The art dealer Barclay Lennie (Barclay Lennie Fine Art Ltd, West Regent Street, Glasgow) with whom Avril Paton has had several exhibitions sold 'The Barras' to Glasgow Art Galleries and Museums in 1987. It was her first major sale to a public body.

The painting is on permanent display at the Peoples Palace Museum on Glasgow Green, Glasgow and remains a personal favourite of the artists.
